Cloud Interoperability Requirements Webinar (PDF from presentation)

Saturday, November 14 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM Mountain Standard Time

Abstract:

Cloud Interoperability requires more than just application portability and security; in the case of distributed services the requirements grow in both number and complexity. A number of challenges and issues ranging from process execution, security, migration/cloning control, to manageability and regulatory compliance hamper inter-organizational interoperability. Computing clouds, cloud providers and stakeholder interests further complicate these issues; both private and public clouds maybe involved in a process execution and services are likely to be owned by different parties. This presentation explores some of the inter-organizational interoperability issues. The webinar will discuss a set of basic requirements for inter-organization cloud interoperability; topics other than just security will be covered.

This webinar is intended to be interactive and active audience participation is encouraged.

Attendance is restricted to 14 participants. Please contact pgoyal@ieee.org if you would like to participate.

Facilitator:

Pankaj Goyal, Ph,D., has many years of experience in IT solutions and has been recently actively engaged in the study of issues related to clouds, services and middleware; during 2009, 5 papers on these topics have been accepted for presentation at IEEE refereed conferences.

Privacy is defined as the right of entities to determine by themselves when, how, and to what extent information about them is communicated to others.  Information that is collected about individuals can be used for a wide variety of purposes such as targeting ADs that a user might be interested in or selling personal information to other companies for profit.  An example of information used to target an AD would be an individual who is in a new area and uses their cell phone to find a Starbucks.  Then, whenever that individual is near a Starbucks, an AD appears on their phone alerting them to the new Starbucks.  This information, either singularly (such as a social security number) or in combination with other personal information such as a name and address constitute what is called personally identifiable information or PII.   Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PET) are tools that are designed to protect an individual’s privacy.  PET generally fall into three categories – software tools (such as data encryption), hardware tools (such as biometrics and smart cards), and actions by users (such as ensuring a password exists on routers at their homes).  This presentation covers the various PET within these three categories and is designed to increase a user’s awareness of threats to their PII as well as mechanisms they can take to enhance security of their PII and their privacy.
